I tried the new brunch spot serving glorious breakfasts that’s even rammed on weekdays

While the centre of Swansea is home to some foodie gems such as Gigi Goa’s Favourite Authentic Chinese (read our review here) and Grandad Needs His Medicine, there are also plenty of reasons to venture into the suburbs for lunch.

One of the city’s newest and most delicious brunch spot can be found in Killays. The Allotment Cafe opened in December 2024 and has caused a stir on social media, especially TikTok.

They serve brilliant breakfasts and brunches in a cosy, warm and welcoming environment. I went along on a Tuesday morning to try it out and was very lucky to get a table, quickly swooping in on a table as the two ladies before us left.

The cafe was busy and bustling and had a real community feel, there were parents and kids, adults having catch-ups and people working on laptops. Inside the decor is sleek, yet soft, with pale green walls, lots of fake plants and comfy seating, including a long window seat with comfortable cushions.

There is a very impressive menu, all at reasonable prices, and soon we were picking what to have. Off an impressive drinks menu, we went for a Gower Sunshine juice, which is orange with ginger and turmeric for £5, a white hot chocolate from the specials menu for £4 and a cappuccino for £3.20. The Gower Sunshine was the star of the show and if you are a juice fan, it is well worth the visit.

The Gower sunshine was the star of the show

It was deliciously refreshing with a brilliant balance of the orange and the ginger. It was not overkill, it was not underkill, it was incredibly fragrant and helped to wash down the food very nicely.

The white hot chocolate was also great, I was worried it was going to be a bit sickly with the white chocolate syrup, whipped cream and white chocolate sauce but actually, it hit the sweetness just right. It was very drinkable and very enjoyable.

The coffee was also good quality. Onto the food, we had the Allotment breakfast for £11, the breakfast burrito for £9 and a salted caramel chocolate brownie for £3.

The breakfast came fully loaded with everything you would want, two rashers of thick-cut bacon, a pork and leek sausage, a fried free-range egg, mushroom, tomato, hash browns, beans and a slice of sourdough bread.

What a breakfast

As promised the bacon really was thick cut with a lovely smoky taste to it. You could taste the leek in the sausage, and tell it was high-quality meat and both the bacon and sausage were very well cooked.

The hash browns came as little potato tots which tasted even better than a normal hash brown. They were nice and crisp on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here

The mushroom and tomato were both very fresh, the mushroom had a good earthy taste, and the beans came in their own pot and were unsalted. Overall, a really great breakfast.

The breakfast burrito was perfect if you are looking for a slightly lighter breakfast option. Wrapped in a light and soft tortilla wrap was scrambled free-range egg, chorizo, tomato salsa and guacamole, and I opted for it without the cheese.

Breakfast wrap
Delicious!

This wrap was packed full and had a really good balance with the salsa. It wasn’t spicy but it gave it a nice kick. There was a good amount of chorizo throughout the wrap which was chewy and oozed flavour, and the guacamole tasted very fresh.

For a sweet treat I opted for a salted caramel brownie, which I choose from a selection of bakes by the till. For £3 the brownie was a very good size and had a lovely salted caramel flavouring.

The brownie was a treat

It was soft and gooey and finished off very quickly. Tucked away in Killay, the Allotment Cafe is a brilliant little cafe. The service was great and everyone was very friendly and attentive, excellent food and it had a lovely relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
