A local assessment day has made it easier for mobility scooter users in Swansea to travel by bus.

The event came about after disabled residents and their families raised concerns about the difficulty of getting a scooter assessment. Without one, some people couldn’t take their scooter on local buses, which limited how easily they could get around.

Local concerns lead to practical action

The Disability Networking Group listened to these concerns and worked with Swansea Bus Station and First Cymru Buses to set up a local assessment day.

Mobility scooter users who came along were able to complete their assessment and apply for the permit needed to travel with their scooter on participating bus services, without having to travel further afield to be assessed.

Supporting independence and confidence

For people with limited mobility, being able to use public transport isn’t just about getting from A to B. It also makes it easier to see family and friends and stay part of the community.

Residents who attended said having a permit would improve their independence, boost their confidence when travelling, and make it simpler to enjoy everyday outings with loved ones.

The assessment day shows what’s possible when local organisations listen to residents and work together to solve a practical problem.
