Travellers have set up in a car park near Swansea’s Civic Centre

Travellers have set up home in a carpark in the shadow of Swansea’s Civic Centre.

They have taken over the Paxton Road site directly opposite the headquarters of Swansea Council with their caravans, cars and vans.

The local authority has vowed to take action to ensure they are moved on.

One furious resident, who refused to be named, said there was now a mess over the site.

She said: “What a wonderful mess the “traveller community” have left over County Hall car park.

“You name it, it’s everywhere.

“Half the travellers have gone but there are some still there.

“The bulk of the mess has been moved to where the clothes bank is on the car park.”

She added: “There’s dog s*** everywhere, abandoned bikes, carpets, crockery, and bottles smashed out on the car park and bus lane.

“Clothes strewn everywhere, abandoned carpets, sanitary items, sacks and sacks of rubbish split open all over the floor.

“The bus route at the back of the car park was littered with broken bottles and crockery on Tuesday.”

A Swansea Council spokesman said steps were being taken to clear the car park.

He said: “The council is aware of the presence of a number of vehicles linked to the traveller community at the Paxton Street car park.

“We are currently going through a formal process to enable them to vacate the site.”
