The top of a dog’s toe was “guillotined” after walking on broken glass discarded at a popular Swansea woods, prompting its owner to call on people to take littering more responsiblity.
Becky Cosgrove took her 10-year-old labrador Pippa and her other dogs for a walk at Penllergare Valley Woods on Tuesday. The area is a popular walking spot for families.
But she was left horrified to discover Pippa had stepped on shattered glass from broken beer bottles during the walk, which resulted in the top of her toe and toenail being taken clean off.
Miss Cosgrove rushed her beloved pet to an emergency vets at Haven, Llanelli, who worked for over an hour and a half to stem the bleeding.

“She was off playing and messing around, I can’t pinpoint when it happened,” the 34-year-old, of Morriston said.
“The blood coming off was just horrible, it looked as if Edward Scissorhands had a go. The tip of her toe came off after she stepped on glass, there was a lot of it down there. It must have been sticking up and it took the tip of her toe off like a guillotine.”

She added: “I took her straight back to the car and rushed to an emergency vets in Llanelli. It took them an hour and a half to stem the bleeding. They could not stop it because of the spot it was.
“It was bandaged up and I had to take her home for 12 hours before going back the following morning. It was still bleeding. They just told me to keep an eye on it and she has been given antibiotics.
“She is not allowed on the grass for two weeks because of the risk of her picking up infections.
“She is fine now, she is eating and does everything she always does. She is a tough cookie.”
Miss Cosgrove made an appeal to those responsible to think about the consequences of their actions before leaving glass discarded.
She said: “Penllergare Woods is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Animals and children go down there and this is something that could be easily avoided. It is such a shame.”
