The Grand Hotel in Swansea is looking to expand and achieve a 4 star rating

A landmark Swansea city centre hotel has lodged significant expansion plans.

The Grand Hotel in Swansea’s High Street has asked Swansea Council for the go-ahead to build a five storey rear extension, a two storey front extension and a room terrace in order to create an additional 42 new rooms.

Those behind the three star hotel want to carry out the move in order for it to become a four star rated venue in future.

The planning application states: “The proposal will create 42 additional bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms and additional facilities which will help improve the facilities at the hotel significantly.

“The hotel has undergone significant investment and expansion over the past 15 years and these further phase is necessary if the hotel is to receive a 4* rating.”

The proposed alterations would result introduction of a residents lounge and reconfiguration of the banquet room to the ground floor.

At first floor level, there would be seven bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and ancillary accommodation including an office, laundry room, staff room and goods lift, and to the second floor, there would be seven bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a gym.

The third floor and fourth floor would would consist of 14 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, whilst the fifth floor would have recessed roof top facilities including conference rooms.

The Grand Hotel has been around since the 1930s, and has been a popular destination through the generations, largely due to its ideal city location and unique design.

Aside from its rooms, Its facilities feature rooftop hot tubs in penthouse suites, a popular sports bar and large conference rooms.

Swansea Council’s planning committee will now consider the application.
