Wales’ favourite culinary hotspots gathered to celebrate a night of excellence with winners from across Wales
For the eighth consecutive year, popular restaurants, cafés, bars, and other culinary hotspots from across the country gathered for the annual Food Awards Wales – a night officials described as “a fantastic evening celebrating the best of the Welsh food industry.”
Voted for by the public, the awards shine a spotlight on excellence across a wide range of categories, including restaurants, takeaways, pubs, hotel restaurants, cafés, and bistros. They also honour those introducing diners to new flavours and global cuisines.
This year’s winners were announced at a glittering ceremony held on Monday, October 6, at the Marriott Hotel in Cardiff. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What’s On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here
Among the standout winners was Maasi’s, which proudly claimed the Best of Cardiff title – for the third year in a row. This Pakistani café, uniquely set within a church hall, serves traditional family-recipe meals, which have won the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Founded in 2021 by former teacher Sabrina Khan, who grew up in Grangetown and Penylan, Maasi’s is more than just a café; it’s a mission.
Built with an all-female team, Sabrina’s vision is to inspire the next generation of women within her community and culture. Following the win, Sabrina shared her gratitude in a heartfelt post: “Thank you to all our lovely customers. We couldn’t do this without you! Thank you to the ladies who are Maasi’s.”
Gastro Pub of the Year was awarded to The White Lion Inn, believed to be one of the oldest country pubs in north Wales. Nestled at the crossroads of the hamlet of Llanelian-yn-Rhos, just above Old Colwyn in Conwy, the historic pub has been proudly run by Simon and Nina for over 30 years.
Renowned for its exceptional Sunday lunches and impressive selection of ales, The White Lion Inn has secured a place in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide for an incredible 27 consecutive years.
Members of the team were present at the awards and later shared their excitement on social media, writing: “Thank you to all our customers, staff, friends and family for your support. A big thanks to everyone who voted for us.”
Following the success of the awards, Irfan Younis, spokesperson for The Food Awards Wales said: “It’s an honour for us to highlight the top food establishments and businesses that have stood out amongst the rest in the Welsh food industry
“This year’s finalists reflect the resilience and creativity of countless chefs, producers, employees and managers who are always ensuring that locals and visitors eat well. We want to congratulate all of our winners on their incredible accomplishments.”
