SUMMARY:'Communion - Jon Doyle in conversation with Elaine Canning
DESCRIPTION:Cultural Institute Literary Salon Series\n‘Communion – Jon Doyle in conversation with Elaine Canning\nWednesday 14 October\, 18:00-19:00\nWaterstones Swansea\, The Old Carlton Cinema\, 17 Oxford St\, Swansea SA1 3AG \nREGISTER HERE: https://bit.ly/jdcommunion \nJust so we’re clear\, she said\, I know the rules of confession. What I say cannot be repeated. Not to anyone… When Mack O’Brien left his home in Port Talbot for the seminary as a teenager\, he didn’t imagine he’d be back a decade later\, unordained and still at a loss as to what makes for a moral life. He takes a job as a security guard at the local steelworks and begins an uneasy transition into the world he once rejected. When the men of the steelworks organise an unprecedented strike in protest against job cuts\, he sees no reason not to go along with it. \nThe last person Mack expects to see in the local club is Siwan Roderick – the woman who appeared out of the blue at the seminary one day to make a confession and swear him to secrecy. Mack kept his word. But as the day of the strike nears\, and as he begins to fully understand what Siwan is planning\, Mack is forced to reckon with his loyalty to her and the question of whether an act of violence can ever be justified. \nAbout the author… Jon Doyle is a writer based in Port Talbot\, South Wales. He was part of Literature Wales’ Representing Wales scheme in 2022/23\, and won the Writers & Artists Working-Class Writers’ Prize 2023. He holds a BSc and MRes in Zoology and MA in Creative Writing from Cardiff University\, and a PhD in Creative Writing from Swansea University. His work has appeared in Short Fiction\, Hobart\, Ploughshares Online\, The Rumpus\, 3:AM Magazine\, Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction among other places. He has been named as one of the Observer’s debut novelists of the year 2026. Communion is his first novel. \n In partnership with Atlantic Books\n*Please note: Event delivered in English.

SUMMARY:'Stride to Modernism': A Personal Journey Through Jazz Piano - Joe Webb
DESCRIPTION:The Richard Burton Annual Lecture\n‘Stride to Modernism’: A Personal Journey Through Jazz Piano – Joe Webb\nTuesday 10th November 2026 | 18:00-19:30\nTaliesin Arts Centre\, Swansea University\, Singleton Campus\, Swansea SA2 8PZ\n  \nFREE TICKETS\nJoin us on the anniversary of Richard Burton’s 101st birthday. \nIn this lecture\, Neath-born pianist Joe Webb reflects on the influences that shaped his development into an award-winning jazz pianist. In tracing some of the musicians who inspired him\, Joe will explore the evolution of jazz piano from the early twentieth century to the 1960s: from Scott Joplin to Bud Powell\, Mary Lou Williams to Hazel Scott\, and Jelly Roll Morton to Herbie Hancock. Along the way\, he will demonstrate key stylistic innovations and perform works that have become cornerstones of the jazz canon. Having devoted the past decade to his career as a performer\, Joe looks forward to sharing his musical journey in a different capacity through this unique combination of performance and conversation. \nJoe Webb is one of the most formidable jazz pianists to emerge in Britain in recent years – a musician with fearless technique\, unmistakable swagger and a melodic instinct shaped by his Welsh roots. His debut album\, Hamstrings & Hurricanes\, was shortlisted for the 2025 Mercury Prize\, and he has performed with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet\, toured with Jamie Cullum and appeared on Later… with Jools Holland\, who calls him “the greatest new piano player in the world today”. Signed to Edition Records\, Joe draws on the virtuosity of stride and early jazz masters\, filtered through a modern British sensibility. \nThe Richard Burton Lecture is part of an annual series of prestigious events led by the Richard Burton Centre in collaboration with the Cultural Institute at Swansea University.
