16 restaurants in and around Swansea that opened in 2020

Lockdowns and coronavirus restrictions meant lots of us spent much of the past year unable to enjoy a good meal out at our favourite restaurants.

But that hasn’t stopped new businesses from opening up serving everything from scrumptious steak to juicy burgers and even desserts.

Here, in no particular order, are some of the new restaurants and places to eat that have opened in and around the city during the last 12 months. While we’re not able to visit at the moment (other than those that are offering takeaway services) let’s hope we will be able to spend most of 2021 enjoying them.

1. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill

Marco Pierre White already has a restaurant in Cardiff which opened in 2016 but opened a new place at The J-Shed in SA1 last year.

The restaurant is famous for signature steaks, timeless English and French classics, and it also serves a range of cocktails. The menu is exclusively curated by Marco himself.

The steakhouse also includes approximately 130 dedicated internal covers and offers a bar and lounge as well as an external drinking and dining area around the entire property.

Here was our review of the place in September.

2. The Dark Horse bar and kitchen

This new place in Mumbles is an independent bar and restaurant serving coffee, cocktails, brunch, and small plates.

The venture has taken over the premises of the former Costa Coffee, the company which announced in February 2020 – weeks before the coronavirus lockdown arrived – that it would be shutting up shop in May.

It will be hard to miss this place which features a spectacular Dark Horse mural on the side of the building.

The burgers are hand-made with fresh beef bought locally. Their success has meant that the burger bar, based in Essex, now has a place in Humphrey Street in Swansea.

It was already a hit in the city following its collaboration with The Optimist Bar and Kitchen in Uplands in 2019, which saw them take over the kitchen for three nights a week. The menu is now three times bigger and even features desserts and milkshakes.

4. Adelina’s Bar and Kitchen
